In most operations, the drone pilot has the most complex tasks. This begins with creating the flight plan and risk analysis. During the flight, the pilot is responsible for the drone and is assisted by the observer.
To be permitted to fly a drone, the pilot also completes theoretical and practical training to obtain the various licenses. In addition to technical flight knowledge, the pilot is trained in drone aerodynamics, drone laws and regulations, meteorology, and communication.
Drone pilots maintain their skills by training annually according to the guidelines laid out in the operational manual.

The pilot is the key player in the preparation and execution of drone operations.
- Properly prepare the flight according to the standards in this manual, including briefing those involved in the assignment.
- Together with the observer, set up and prepare the equipment required for the flight.
- Check that all system logs are up-to-date and that the drone is airworthy.
- Conduct the pre-flight check together with the observer.
- Perform the risk assessment.
- Post-flight handling, such as completing the logbook and logbook and reporting the assignment results.
- Ensure communication with the observer(s).
- Ensure that the prescribed actions for the actual execution of the flight have been taken.
